When Calls the Heart: Home for Christmas

Traditionally the Christmas specials of "When Calls the Heart" are basically stand-alone. While they're a great feel-good 1.5 hours of television, they're not usually super important to the overall storyline. This one is no exception.

It's Christmastime in Hope Valley, and that means we're approaching Baby Jack's first birthday! By my count, that means we've been without Mountie Jack (RIP) for a year and 8 months. Understandably Elizabeth is very nostalgic and missing Mountie Jack all the more at this time of year.

The town is also in the throes of a big Christmas festival organized by Lucas. Everyone, except Bill who still doesn't trust Lucas (same, Bill, same) and Nathan, who curmudgeonly hates crowds (same, Nathan, same), is loving the festival, and as a bonus to Lucas himself, the restaurant/hotel's bookings are through the roof. So much so that he has to recruit Clara to come back and help him. She, in turn, recruits Jesse. In the end, there's just too many people and Lucas quickly runs out of food. Hope Valley does what Hope Valley does and creates a giant potluck in the saloon for the residents and the guests, creating an impromptu Christmas party. Even Henry, Bill, and Nathan contribute.

Nathan's a bit distracted as he's wrestling with his own problems. He's just found out that he's been offered a promotion to Inspector, but it would mean a post back in Union City. Up until now, this had been Nathan's dream but now he's apprehensive because Allie's keen to put down roots in one place, plus he feels some sort of way about Elizabeth.  As Nathan mulls over the promotion, he sets out to make this the best Christmas ever for Allie, and Elizabeth is more than happy to lend a hand. Allie accidentally finds out about the promotion offer and spills the beans to Elizabeth, who is crestfallen.

Meanwhile, Aunt Rosemary and Uncle Lee and Uncle Bill are having some issues getting ready for Little Jack's birthday. Rosemary and Lee have no idea what to get the little man - and Rosemary feels a bit inadequate that she can't think of a perfect present because she's not a mom. The scenes with Rosemary and Jack are absolutely adorable! Bill actually has the perfect present for the tyke, but he just can't find it. Hilarity ensues as he tears apart the town looking for the mystery gift. We're treated to a cute little scene at Jack's birthday dinner with just Elizabeth and Jack, Bill, Rosemary and Lee, and Jack's nanny, Laura. The next day the OGs reconvene for Christmas and a gift exchange. Rosemary and Lee had Hickham handmake a rocking horse - and Jack takes to it like the son of Mountie would.

Bill gifts Jack with a compass, that originally belonged to Mountie Jack so Little Jack can "always find his way home, with the help of his father." The moments between Elizabeth and Bill have been great since Mountie Jack's passing.

Elizabeth leads the children's choir in a Christmas Eve program (this town has got to get some more entertainment) and slips in a heartfelt speech about home being where the heart is. Nathan feels that and soon lets Allie know that they're staying put. Elizabeth is visibly joyed by that news.

There's another storyline wherein Carson and Faith get their wires crossed and Carson heads to Faith's family home while Faith heads back to HV. Blah blah blah they figure it out for Christmas Eve.

Henry Gowan continues his metamorphisis into a good guy and has taken a traveling salesman under his wing.

The new season is back in February and they're teasing a heavy 'who will Elizabeth pick' story. Nothing will match Erin Krakow and Daniel Lissing's chemistry. I recently rewatched the series from the beginning and there was something palpable between them so I'm totally a-okay with them letting her be single for a good while, but if I had to pick between Kevin McGarry and Chris McNally, it's definitely Kevin. I just don't see any chemistry between Erin and Chris.

See you back in Hope Valley in February!
