Double Holiday

I absolutely LOVE that HM is branching out to include other faith celebrations! That said, I stopped and restarted this movie approximately 5 times because I just wasn't feeling it.

So Rebecca (Carly Pope) and Chris (Kristoffer Polaha) are equals at a real estate development firm. Their shared supervisor leaves abruptly which means there's a VP spot up for grabs. For reasons I'm still not clear on, Rebecca and Chris have to team up to plan the company's big Christmas party to impress a potential new client (a charity foundation looking to expand their rec centers and parks) and that's how the world's worst boss will decide who becomes the new VP. Absurd? Yes, absolutely. They should both take this time to look for new jobs.

Rebecca and Chris are serious rivals. Rebecca's all stereotypical "I have to focus on my career for now and don't have time for a love life" and is super driven, but also super insecure. Rebecca also happens to be Jewish, so she feels she's at a distinct disadvantage on the party-planning front because she never celebrated Christmas. Chris is a bit more easy-going, but every bit as driven.

After stopping in at Rebecca's house one evening (can you imagine a co-worker you're not even close to showing up at your house??!), Chris finds Rebecca getting ready for the first night of Chanukah, and not doing so great. He takes over frying the latkes (so good!) and is invited to stay for the celebration by Rebecca's really outgoing and fun, if not seriously over-stepping family. They like Chris so much that he's invited to celebrate the remaining 7 nights with them. So he spends the next week learning Chanukah traditions - songs, prayers, foods, and he and Rebecca plan the Christmas party together. This is especially poignant for Chris as he doesn't have family of his own to spend the holidays with.

In the past, the party has been stuffy, but with Rebecca and Chris at the helm, they transform it into a family-friendly event with Santa, Elf Workshops, etc. inspired by Chris' volunteer work at the town's community center and Big Brother program. Chris also surprises Rebecca by having her family at the party to recite the prayer for the last night of Chanukah.

Obviously Rebecca and Chris impress the client and are hired to build the new youth centers. Rebecca gets the VP gig at the current firm, but Chris is offered his dream job of actually running the youth centers.

And they lived happily ever after.

Rebecca explains Chanukah to Chris using the cell phone analogy. It makes me roll my eyes so hard I gave myself a headache. "Let's say this cell phone has 10% battery left but it lasts for 8 days. It's a miracle!"

There's a secondary plot where Rebecca has a crush on "Fancy Suit Guy", someone who works for a law firm in the same building and they only interact on the elevator. Chris picks up on it and becomes her wingman.

The party is at their boss's house. Rebecca and Chris have to decorate it (completely) and everything. This seems like a scam.
