Picture a Perfect Christmas

via Hallmark Channel
Sophie (Merritt Patterson) is a successful globe-trotting photographer based in San Francisco who finds herself without Christmas plans when her boyfriend, also a photographer, gets a job as the tour photographer for a band. With not much else to do, Sophie heads to her grandmother's house on Bainbridge Island to celebrate the holidays and help Grandma Louise recuperate from a foot injury. While there, Sophie meets and befriends Louise's precocious little neighbor, Troy, who, after losing his parents, lives with his uncle David (John Cor). David's been learning to be a dad and juggle his tech business and is also frantically looking for a substitute nanny for Troy during Christmas break and his first meeting with Sophie is a case of mistaken identity. Sophie takes it in stride and ends up volunteering to look after Troy, and by extension, spends more and more time with David. Things get dicey when Sophie gets her dream gig in Switzerland, but it means leaving Bainbridge before Christmas, and therefore missing Troy's appearance in the Pageant. In the end, Sophie risks her big job by not willing to disappoint Troy and leave David and Louise for Christmas.

One of the things I liked the best is how they played Brent (HM veteran Toby Levins). Brent's driven, as is Sophie been, but not in an evil, neglectful way. He's not portrayed as bad, nor is Sophie long-suffering. They're just two people who come to realize they're not suited for one another. Even when Brent meets David, there's no excruciating p*ssing match, and Sophie and Brent have a mature conversation and break-up.

I also really love that for someone who had parenthood thrust upon him within the last year, he's not bumbling. Yes, he needs help and yes, he's still learning balance, but he's not a bumbling idiot. He's present and focused on Troy. There's also not a moment of lamenting about how he gave up his Seattle life for a home in the suburbs because it was better for his nephew.

Fun fact, Toby Levins (who plays Brent) is actually Australian. I never would have guessed that! We've seen Toby before in Christmas at Holly Lodge, Christmas Homecoming, and this year's Godwink. I hope he gets a main spot soon!

HM is killing it with the rescue pups this year, and Riggs is no exception!

We also see another HM repeat, Terence Kelly (he plays the pageant director, Simon). Terence has been in When Calls the Heart, Window Wonderland, Finding Father Christmas, and The Christmas Train.

Y'all know how much I love a meddling grandparent!

I think we can all agree that all children's programs should not be more than 30 minutes.

Cute little backstory with David explaining that he always participates in toy drives because when he was little, he and his brother benefitted from them.
